Project RRRD.024 Final Report for the Australian Government’s Caring for Our Country Reef Rescue Water Quality Research and Development Program.

This project investigated the potential to mechanically rehabilitate degraded, bare, D-condition grazing lands to improved condition in the Burdekin and Fitzroy River catchments of north-east Queensland. With successful rehabilitation there will be increased pasture health and productivity which will reduce water, sediment and nutrient runoff, with the aim of improving the quality of water flowing into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon from grazing land.

Managers of the five grazing properties that cover Torilla Plain in central Queensland have developed productive and resilient enterprises for breeding and fattening of cattle. Wise use of natural pastures on their marine plain is the key. The wetlands across the plain also support biodiversity of national and global importance. By implementing externally supported programs, often in collaboration with neighbouring properties, managers have enhanced the sustainability of their natural resources, livelihoods and wildlife.

Broadmeadows is a viable commercial and stud cattle business co-existing with waterbirds and wildlife that regularly nest in the wetland on the Nankin Creek floodplain. The Nankin Creek custodians apply strategies to successfully reduce soil erosion on the vulnerable slopes in the catchment.

Pastures for protection & production describes how planting pastures on marginal cropping lands can protect the catchments of the Murray Darling in southern Queensland. It has sections on:

  • the problems with trying to restore land to its pre-settlement state

  • establishing pastures on old cropping land
  • managing the pasture
  • recovery of run-down sown pastures.

This guide to Reducing weed risks from fodder aims to increase awareness of weed risks associated with fodder use in Queensland. It highlights tools which can be used to help you assess your weed risks when sourcing fodder and suggests simple strategies for reducing weed risk during fodder transportation, storage and feeding out. Ongoing monitoring for new weeds following the use of fodder is also recommended and this guide explains easy steps to monitor your weeds and have them identified.
