SUMMARY:Controlling buffalo flies and fly lesions: what have we learned?
DESCRIPTION:Join the ParaBoss extension team as they take you on a journey to minimise the impact that buffalo flies have in your herds. \nBuffalo flies are now ranked as the costliest health issue in Australia’s northern cattle industries and are extending their range into southern production areas. \nThey cause reductions in weight gain and milk production loss\, decrease skin quality and have been suggested to disrupt mating and reduce ease of management through the substantial irritation caused by their bites. \nLesions associated with buffalo fly infestation are also an important issue\, causing rejection of cattle from some markets and decreased value in the saleyards. \nIn this webinar\, Dr Peter James will delve deep into issues in the management of buffalo flies and lesions and the implications of outcomes from recent research.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Preparation for transport - effects on cattle performance and health for the supply chain
DESCRIPTION:Transporting & handling livestock is a specialist task and one which the whole supply chain relies on to be performed safely\, efficiently\, and professionally to protect our animals\, staff and stakeholders. The transport industry recognises that the livestock industry needs to work in a collaborative manner to ensure cattle are set up for the next person in the supply chain\, and in doing so there is a need to understand what the next destination requires of those animals and prepare them appropriately. \nTo put this into some context\, Queensland currently has 10.7 million head of cattle which equates to 44% of the national herd\, on a regional basis Central Queensland’s Fitzroy basin area easily has the most cattle in Australia totalling 2.523 million head. Queensland’s top agricultural export commodity value in 2020/21 was $4.84 Billion worth of red meat. That’s a lot to digest\, but this highlights the scale\, productivity\, and efficiency of our road freight sector for livestock. \nSo\, carting livestock from A to B sounds simple\, but there is a lot that goes on behind the scene and that’s why the transport hub has been developed by industry for industry. Safe\, efficient and humane livestock transport improves outcomes for livestock\, boosts profits for the supply chain and facilitates industry sustainability. \nIn this BeefConnect webinar\, join Rick Young (NAPCO’s Supply Chain Manager) when he discusses and outlines the importance\, and dollar value attached to good animal handling and preparation for transport while also being proactive in our future strategic planning. \nRegister now to join the webinar to expand your knowledge and receive some important information on good animal handling and preparation for transport.

SUMMARY:The Asian-Australasian Association of Animal Production Societies (AAAP) & Australian Association of Animal Sciences (AAAS) Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:WELCOME\n\n\n\n\nIt is our great pleasure to invite you to the joint Congress for the Australian Association of Animal Science (AAAS) and the Asian-Australasian Association of Animal Production (AAAP). Focusing on recent and future developments in Animal Science\, this congress combines the 35th biennial AAAS conference and the 20th AAAP Congress in one meeting. This 3-day event (plus day tours) will take place from July 8th to 12th\, 2024 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.  \nThis congress aims to bring together the brightest minds in animal science from the Asia and Australasia regions to discuss recent developments and research findings in the field. The conference will include keynote speeches from prominent researchers\, informative presentations\, and interactive workshops. All of which will provide a great platform for networking and collaboration among professionals in the animal science industry and academy. \nThe theme of the congress is “Embracing disruption as an opportunity for animal science”. Topics of discussion will include animal genetics\, breeding\, nutrition\, health\, behaviour\, and welfare across a wide variety of species. We encourage participants to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations that highlight their original research\, innovative technologies\, and best practices. \nWhile attending the congress\, we invite you to explore Melbourne’s vibrant and cosmopolitan city. Known for its cultural diversity and vibrant food and art scenes\, Melbourne is home to numerous attractions that cater to different interests. Visit the Royal Botanic Gardens for a peaceful walk and a glimpse of the native flora\, or explore the many museums and art galleries in the city. Remember to indulge in Melbourne’s world-renowned coffee and cuisine. We will also be providing the opportunity to visit some of the picturesque surroundings in a number of post-conference tours. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne and to an engaging and informative congress experience. \n\nYou can register for this event here.

SUMMARY:Keeping Coccidiosis at bay - in sheep\, cattle and goats
DESCRIPTION:Join the ParaBoss extension team for an in-depth exploration of Coccidiosis in sheep\, cattle and goats. \nYou hear a lot of talk about ‘Coxie’ causing disease in livestock\, but what is it? \nThis parasite more formally called ‘coccidiosis’\, affects young sheep\, cattle and goats\, plus a range of other animal species\, including pigs and chooks. As well as death and sickness\, Coxie can slow growth rates in young stock. Sometimes undiagnosed stock losses may be due to Coxie. \nIn this webinar\, Dr Alison Gunn will explain the conditions in which Coxie develop\, signs and symptoms of the disease and its impact on livestock\, plus steps you can take to minimise its impact.

SUMMARY:Breeding for Poll in AACo: modelling to implementation
DESCRIPTION:Breeding herds with an increasing proportion of polled animals is highly topical in the Australian beef industry. Producer and public concerns surrounding dehorning mean that actively selecting for polled is an attractive option. However\, balancing selection for polled with other traits and maintaining genetic diversity within a herd is challenging. Therefore\, it is essential that the implications of integrating polled into an existing breeding program be considered (as accurately as possible)\, and as part of designing and implementing a breeding program. \nIn a collaboration between MLA\, Australian Agricultural Company and the University of Queensland\, this project has created a highly accurate ‘digital twin’ of AACo’s seedstock breeding program. This ‘twin’ allows for the optimization of the breeding program to find the most effective pathway to a polled herd. The key part of the digital twin is the use of the genomic Simulation software which uses real genotypes to simulate offspring\, this allows realistic breeding values and inbreeding to be calculated for multiple generations. \nThe project has sought to answer questions such as:\n• What is the optimal blend of natural service\, artificial insemination and embryo transfer in a breeding program?\n• How much selection pressure can be applied for polled without compromising genetic gain for other traits? \nIn this BeefConnect webinar\, Join Matthew Kelly (Principal Scientist – AACo) and James Copley (Quantitative Geneticist – AACo) when they discuss: \nBreeding for poll in practice and its challenges:\no Managing animal performance and polled.\no Managing genetic diversity and polled.\no Impact of scurs. \nHow to use the digital twin to drive better decision-making:\no Predicting the rate of genetic gain for polled and other traits.\no Examining the level of inbreeding under different selection scenarios.\no Industry applications of the digital twin. \nRegister for the webinar here.
