SUMMARY:MLA Sustainability series: Time controlled grazing — Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the Meat & Livestock Australia Sustainability Webinar Series: Time-Controlled Grazing\, 10 September at 6:30pm (AEST). \nTime-controlled grazing (TCG) has been promoted for its potential to improve soil health\, pasture productivity\, and livestock performance. However\, its adoption in Australia has been limited due to conflicting scientific evidence. \nResearch with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) compared paired paddocks under TCG and conventional grazing management\, measuring for impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration\, nitrogen and biodiversity. \nYour expert presenter will be Professor David Rowlings\, Program of Sustainable Agriculture – QUT.

Every workshop will include case studies and examples for participants to learn from. \nWho is the Carbon EDGE program for?\nThe program is for red meat producers who are looking to build on their understanding of carbon. The program will help participants move into a planning and action phase\, identifying practices and technologies that could be incorporated into their business to benefit their bottom line and the environment. It is also suitable for advisors and other service providers looking to enhance their understanding of the current operating environment. \nPre-workshop preparation\nThe design of the Carbon EDGE workshops recognises that everyone will be at a different starting point when it comes to carbon. However\, it is highly recommended that participants complete pre-work before attending to get the best out of the program. This includes the eLearning modules available on MLA’s Toolbox and a carbon account. Your workshop deliverer will be in touch to guide you through this process. \nHear from our presenters on what attendees will take home from the workshop:\n \nClick here to find out more \nIf you have any questions\, contact Hilary Connors on 0427 467 608. \nThis event has been heavily subsidised by Westpac.

SUMMARY:MLA Sustainability series: Modelling soil carbon in grazing lands with Agrimix
DESCRIPTION:Flux towers\, operated by Agrimix\, measure carbon exchange from soil to the atmosphere. The results show a novel technology that could be used to reduce cost of soil carbon measurement for management purposes or carbon credit schemes. \nThis project was born when Agrimix director\, Nick Kempe\, started asking “how much carbon can Progardes®desmanthus\, a deep tap rooted\, nitrogen-fixing legume\, actually sequester?”. We then realised there was no reliable\, low-cost way to find out the answer! \nAgrimix teamed up with renowned soil scientists Professor Peter Grace and Professor David Rowlings and commissioned a major scientific research study into eddy covariance flux tower technology in collaboration with QUT\, with support from leading Australian beef producers. \nThis project is part of Meat & Livestock Australia’s Carbon Storage Partnership and the Australian Government’s National Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge. \nSpeakers: \nZac Geldof – Principal Agronomist\, Agrimix\nChloe Kempe\, Research Program Manager\, Agrimix \nDate and time: 17 September at 6:30pm AEST (7:30pm AEDT)

SUMMARY:Adaptive grazing for better pasture and cattle production — Spyglass Beef Research Station\, Basalt
DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in learning more about adaptive techniques for improving pastures and animal production in a variable climate\, then don’t miss next month’s field day at Spyglass Beef Research Station\, hosted by NQ Dry Tropics and the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI).Get the low down on The Virtually Fencing Free long-term trial\, which is testing out technology and land management techniques to improve drought resilience for North Queensland grazing enterprises.Spyglass is hosting the five-year research project\, which aims to establish whether the eShepherd virtual fencing system could enable rangeland graziers to effectively implement fine-scale\, adaptive grazing systems in commercial-sized beef cattle herds. The technology allows users to remotely and instantly modify digital paddock boundaries to redirect cattle without the need to muster. This makes it easier to rest overgrazed paddocks and ensure cattle use all available feed.Other presenters include Amelia Downs producer Jane Moore\, and representatives from the Northern Australia Climate Program\, TEKFARM and Climate Outreach Program.Click here to reserve your spot\, or scan the QR code on the flyer. https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1462919Strictly RSVP by COB on Monday 1 October.
