SUMMARY:MLA Sustainability series: Time controlled grazing — Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the Meat & Livestock Australia Sustainability Webinar Series: Time-Controlled Grazing\, 10 September at 6:30pm (AEST). \nTime-controlled grazing (TCG) has been promoted for its potential to improve soil health\, pasture productivity\, and livestock performance. However\, its adoption in Australia has been limited due to conflicting scientific evidence. \nResearch with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) compared paired paddocks under TCG and conventional grazing management\, measuring for impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration\, nitrogen and biodiversity. \nYour expert presenter will be Professor David Rowlings\, Program of Sustainable Agriculture – QUT.

SUMMARY:MLA Sustainability series: Modelling soil carbon in grazing lands with Agrimix
DESCRIPTION:Flux towers\, operated by Agrimix\, measure carbon exchange from soil to the atmosphere. The results show a novel technology that could be used to reduce cost of soil carbon measurement for management purposes or carbon credit schemes. \nThis project was born when Agrimix director\, Nick Kempe\, started asking “how much carbon can Progardes®desmanthus\, a deep tap rooted\, nitrogen-fixing legume\, actually sequester?”. We then realised there was no reliable\, low-cost way to find out the answer! \nAgrimix teamed up with renowned soil scientists Professor Peter Grace and Professor David Rowlings and commissioned a major scientific research study into eddy covariance flux tower technology in collaboration with QUT\, with support from leading Australian beef producers. \nThis project is part of Meat & Livestock Australia’s Carbon Storage Partnership and the Australian Government’s National Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge. \nSpeakers: \nZac Geldof – Principal Agronomist\, Agrimix\nChloe Kempe\, Research Program Manager\, Agrimix \nDate and time: 17 September at 6:30pm AEST (7:30pm AEDT)

SUMMARY:HerdFlow® - high-level livestock inventory management for the extensive pastoral industry
DESCRIPTION:Not having accurate and reconciled herd data is one of the biggest challenges we have observed in the Australian beef industry. Getting accurate numbers in the paddock is difficult enough\, but beyond that\, there are additional challenges in accurately recording\, reconciling\, and using this data. This results in a significant bottleneck in understanding and improving herd performance at a herd and industry level. \nIn addition\, the lack of an industry standard or consistent language for categorising livestock classes and/or age groups has contributed to and compounded the problem of inaccurate herd records. This has been addressed with the Australian Herd Classification Guidelines. \nIn this BeefConnect webinar\, join Harry Evans (Bush Agribusiness) when he discusses how these guidelines underpin the classification of animals within the HerdFlow® platform\, and outlines how: \n\nHerdFlow captures\, reconciles and reports on animal movements within and between business units\, locations and enterprises. It can accommodate standalone single enterprise businesses through to large integrated companies\, with multiple business units\, enterprises and locations.\nHerdFlow calculates and reports on kilograms produced\, animal units carried\, herd inventory values\, herd inventory change\, herd gross profit\, reproductive rate and mortality. Herd emissions are calculated within the report using industry standard calculations.\nHow budgeted herd data can be entered into\, and reported on\, within the platform as well as actual.\nHow data can be imported into the HerdFlow platform.\nHerdFlow does not collect detailed herd data that existing herd software products generally do (e.g. check weights\, treatments\, or paddock moves) and has been developed to complement\, not compete with\, existing herd software products.\n\nHerdFlow® is the high-level livestock inventory management platform for the extensive pastoral industry that will allow you to assess your herd performance against industry benchmarks using a standardised set of measures. \n \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
