Looking out for yourself and each other

Looking out for yourself and each other

There are plenty of things to think about when you’re running a grazing business – cattle, grass, finances, family, the weather and whatever else the week decides to throw at you.

Most of the time we get on with it. But everyone has times when things aren’t going well, and no one has to deal with everything alone.

Sometimes a conversation with someone you trust can help.

That person doesn’t have to be a mental health professional. It might be your partner, a neighbour, another producer, someone at your local rural store or simply a mate who’s willing to listen.
Chances are, someone else has been through something similar and understands more than you might realise.

That’s part of what Tackling Regional Adversity through Connected Communities (TRACC) is about – helping people across rural and remote Queensland look after themselves and each other.

TRACC has Regional Adversity Clinicians working across ten Queensland regions, spanning the far north, central, western and southern parts of the state.

The program was originally established to help regional and rural communities through drought, natural disasters and other periods of adversity. Today, its focus includes building stronger, more connected communities and helping people know where to turn to when they need a hand.

Knowing what to do when someone isn’t themselves

We’ve probably all had a time when a mate, neighbour or someone we work alongside hasn’t seemed quite themselves, or they’ve opened up about something they’re going through. You might want to help but aren’t sure what to say or do next.

TRACC provides a range of training options to give people practical skills and confidence to have those conversations and know where to go for further support.
One option is a two-day Mental Health First Aid course that builds broader skills in recognising common mental health problems, providing initial support and knowing where and how to find professional help.

The training is designed for anyone who wants to feel more confident supporting the people around them, whether that’s family, staff, neighbours, mates or others in their community.
Training opportunities are low-cost, and in many cases free, with TRACC collaborating with local organisations to facilitate workshop delivery throughout rural and regional areas.

Building stronger rural communities

Rural communities are often good at looking out for their own. TRACC builds on those existing connections, helping communities build the knowledge, skills and support networks that can make a difference when someone needs a hand.

Because looking out for each other doesn’t mean having all the answers.

Sometimes it’s simply noticing when someone isn’t themselves, knowing how to start a conversation and being there to listen.
