Choosing the Right Pasture Species

Queensland’s pastoral zones span tropical savannas, semi-arid rangelands, and sub-tropical improved pasture systems. No single grass or legume suits all environments. Matching species to your situation is the foundation of a lasting pasture.

Native vs. sown pastures

Much of Queensland’s beef production runs on native pastures — Mitchell grass downs, speargrass country, and mulga shrublands. These landscapes have co-evolved with grazing and, when managed correctly, are highly productive and resilient. However, native pastures can be slow to recover from overgrazing or drought, and their productivity ceiling is lower than well-managed improved pastures.

Sown improved pastures (typically exotic tropical grasses with or without legumes) offer higher carrying capacity and faster recovery, but require investment in establishment and often more active management to prevent weed ingress and maintain legume content.

Grasses by rainfall zone

  • Above 700 mm (NQ, coastal CQ, SEQ): Brachiaria (signal grass, humidicola), Megathyrsus maximus (green panic, gatton panic), buffel grass on lighter soils
  • 500–700 mm (central CQ, inland SEQ): Buffel grass, Rhodes grass, Bambatsi panic, native Queensland bluegrass
  • Below 500 mm (SQ, western CQ): Buffel grass, blue buffel, native Mitchell grass, mulga-associated native species

Legumes — the nitrogen engine

Incorporating a legume (e.g. Desmanthus, Stylosanthes, Siratro, Leucaena) with your grass can lift liveweight gain by 20–40% and reduce nitrogen fertiliser requirements. Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodule bacteria. To be effective, the legume must maintain at least 20–30% of the sward composition by dry weight.

Leucaena is one of the highest-performing options in 600–800 mm rainfall country but requires careful establishment and is not suited to soils that waterlog. Desmanthus is better adapted to heavy cracking clays in drier areas.
