Long-distance MSA transport webinar

Date: Tuesday 30 July 2013
Time:
12:30pm-1:30pm AEST
Event category:
Venue

More cattle producers will be able to cash-in on Meat Standards Australia (MSA) premiums following recent adjustments to the grading system’s transport protocols.

This development will:

  • substantially enlarge the MSA ‘harvest footprint’, allowing properties much further from MSA-licensed abattoirs to access MSA premiums, and
  • increase buying competition on MSA stock for some existing producers, by allowing supply to more distant MSA processors than what can currently be achieved.

Under the changes, the MSA pathways committee has recommended the former ‘day after despatch’ MSA slaughter protocol be extended to 48 hours (with a maximum of 36 hours in transport).

Researchers found that extending the transport time from 12 to 36 hours had no detrimental effect on eating quality.

In this webinar you will learn about:

  • the new MSA transport protocol and how it can be applied
  • the findings from the research project in relation to extended transport time on eating quality and stress levels, and the impact of spelling on eating quality and stress
  • how the new MSA transport protocol is likely to benefit producers in more remote areas that currently cannot access MSA premiums.

In preparation for the webinar, you may like to read the ‘Transport duration effects on MSA eating quality’ final report or other information about MSA.

Guest presenters

Join MSA pathways coordinator Rod Polkinghorne and far western Queensland beef producer Cameron Daley, with hosts Jon Condon (Beef Central) and John James (FutureBeef).

They will outline the findings of the recent MLA-funded research; the conditions that apply under the new transport protocol; and offer some insight as to how the new standard may be applied under commercial conditions for remote producers. Both will be available to answer questions from participants.
