Poisonous plants in northern Australia
Poisonous plants aren’t limited to declared weeds or introduced species—many are Australian natives. Poisonous plants are also not restricted to one region, nor is it likely that there is only one poisonous plant in a region. Truth be told, there are many plants that are toxic to ruminants, occurring in all growth forms—trees, shrubs, forbs, grasses, even algae. As such, being able to recognise common poisonous plants is an important skill for any grazier to have.
Listed below are common species grouped by growth type for easier identification.
